Tips for Great Family Portraits

Get the most out of your Tri-cities family portrait session

Every family has their own ideas of what the perfect portrait session should be. Some families want to feel relaxed and natural, while others prefer to have a more formal setting with all members dressed in matching outfits. The best portraits are often created when everyone can agree on what they expect from the photographer. Here, we will give you some tips for getting your family ready for a successful family portrait session!

  • Schedule your session a few weeks in advance. This  gives everyone time to plan their schedule around the shoot date, and ensures that they are ready  on the day of the shoot! If necessary, choose an even later date or time if it is difficult for everyone in your family to make it out at once.
  • Don't be late for your photo session! If you are going to be late, call the photographer as soon as possible. Be sure that everyone in the family has arrived before proceeding with your portrait session - it's very important for all members of a group photo to be present!
  • Wear appropriate clothing for a family portrait session. Dress in colors that all look great together and will contrast well with the background, or choose a neutral color palette that looks good on everyone. Try to avoid wearing white - it can appear too bright and distract from your face.
  • Choose a location with natural light. Look for a place with open shade - this is usually found under large trees or next to a  building. If you choose to take your family portraits in direct sun, be sure that everyone's face and shoulders are shaded by either an umbrella or a tree.
  • Bring along any props that might help capture who you are as a family. Things like sports equipment, instruments or anything else that might be symbolic of your family are great choices.
  • Finally, make sure you have fun during the session! As with any portrait session it's important to feel comfortable in front of the camera so try not to get too stressed out about getting every shot perfect. Just relax and enjoy yourself -

Finding the right Johnson City Portrait Photographer

If you are looking for a quality photographer, there are many things to consider. To help make the process easier for you, this article will go through some of the most important considerations you should be thinking about when trying to find your perfect match.

  • What is your budget? Decide how much you want to spend on a photographer. If you have ever been to weddings, family events or other special occasions where professional photographers were hired, you will know that prices vary quite a bit from one person to the next so it is important for you to set your budget before starting to look through portfolios and profiles of potential candidates. This is true for portraits as well as event photography.
  • What are your priorities? Do you want traditional photos or unusual themed pictures? Do you want candid shots or posed photos? Do you need the photographer to be able to interact with children and babies or just let them do their thing as long as they are in the picture.
  • Is there a specific style of portrait you want? Do you want to see examples of the photographer’s work? Do they specialize in a certain type of subject or scene?
  • How many photos will be taken? How long of a session time is needed? Most portrait sessions are one hour long. Ask your photographer how many images you will receive.
  • Do you want portraits taken in a studio or outside? Most portrait sessions are taken either in a studio or outdoors. However, some photographers specialize in outdoor shoots on location.
  • What type of editing do you want? Most professional photographers will edit their photos for color and lighting so that the final product is perfect when printed onto high quality photo paper. Ask your photographer what type of editing they offer to see if they have any special editing styles.
  • Personality matters when it comes to finding a photographer. Make sure you will get along well with your photographer. If you are not comfortable with the photographer, it will show in your photos.
  • Do they have sample work? Most professional photographers have a website or blog where potential clients can see their previous work. You should always check out an artist’s portfolio to make sure you like their style before hiring them for your photo session!
  • Check online reviews. You can often find reviews for local artists on sites like Yelp or Google maps. Be wary of review websites where anyone can post, as they are less reliable than those posted by verified clients.
  • Do you know someone who has worked with the photographer?  Personal recommendations are the best.
