What Is the Difference Between an Elopement and a Micro-Wedd

An elopement usually centers on the couple and the commitment they are making to each other. It may be completely private or include only a few witnesses, close friends, or family members. Elopements are often relaxed and flexible, allowing couples to choose a courthouse, scenic outdoor setting, private property, or another meaningful location for their ceremony.

A micro-wedding has a small guest list but often includes many of the traditional elements of a larger wedding. This may include a formal ceremony, family photographs, wedding party portraits, a reception, cake cutting, a first dance, and time spent celebrating with loved ones.

The distinction is not based on one universal guest count. In general, an elopement emphasizes privacy and simplicity, while a micro-wedding combines an intimate atmosphere with more traditional wedding-day experiences. Both options allow couples to create a celebration that feels personal, meaningful, and true to their relationship.

Elopement Locations in Johnson City and East Tennessee

Johnson City and the surrounding East Tennessee region offer many beautiful settings for elopements and intimate wedding ceremonies. Depending on the experience you envision, your ceremony could take place at a courthouse, local park, mountain overlook, cabin, waterfall, small wedding venue, private property, or a meaningful location connected to your relationship.

Downtown Johnson City can provide an urban setting with historic buildings, interesting architecture, and convenient locations for celebrating afterward. Couples who prefer a natural setting can consider one of the region’s parks, mountain areas, wooded properties, or scenic overlooks.

A family home, private property, or rented cabin can also create a comfortable and personal setting for exchanging vows. Some couples choose the place where they first met, had their first date, became engaged, or created another important memory together.

Rules for ceremonies and professional photography vary by location. Some parks, overlooks, waterfalls, and public properties may require permission, reservations, photography fees, or event permits. Always confirm the location’s current requirements before finalizing your plans.

A Relaxed and Candid Photography Experience

My approach to elopement and micro-wedding photography is relaxed, personal, and focused on genuine moments. Approximately 80 percent of the photographs I take are candid, while about 20 percent are posed. This balance allows me to document your day naturally while still creating the polished portraits you will want to display and share.

During your ceremony and celebration, I photograph the real emotions and interactions as they happen. These might include a nervous smile before the ceremony, a quiet moment between the two of you, laughter with your family, or the reactions of loved ones as you exchange vows.

When it is time for couple portraits, family photographs, or important group pictures, I provide clear and gentle direction so you do not have to wonder where to stand or what to do. My goal is to help you feel comfortable without making your photographs look stiff or overly staged.

The result is a collection of candid images and thoughtfully guided portraits that reflects the atmosphere, emotions, and personal story of your wedding day.

Elopement FAQ

How much does elopement photography cost in Johnson City?

Elopement and micro-wedding photography begins at $700 for two hours of coverage. Four hours of coverage is available for $1,100. A one-hour post-elopement portrait session is available for $250.

What is the difference between an elopement and a micro-wedding?

An elopement usually focuses primarily on the couple and may include only a few witnesses or loved ones. A micro-wedding has a small guest list but often includes traditional wedding elements such as a ceremony, family photographs, cake cutting, a first dance, or a small reception. There is no universal guest count that separates the two.

What is included in an elopement photography package?

Elopement and micro-wedding packages include a set amount of photography coverage, all unedited digital images delivered through an online gallery, and a selected number of professionally edited photographs. The gallery can be shared with friends and family, and photographs can be downloaded directly from it.

Should we choose two or four hours of photography coverage?

Two hours may be enough to photograph a short ceremony, couple portraits, and family photographs. Four hours allows additional time for getting-ready moments, wedding details, the ceremony, portraits, and part of a small celebration or reception. The best option depends on your schedule and which moments are most important to you.

How many edited photographs will we receive?

The two-hour package includes 75 professionally edited images, while the four-hour package includes 150 edited images. The one-hour post-elopement session includes 12 professionally edited images.

What is a post-elopement photography session?

A post-elopement session is a separate portrait session held after you are married. It is a good option for couples who married privately, did not have professional photography during their ceremony, experienced poor weather, or want additional wedding portraits at a scenic location.

Where can we have an elopement in Johnson City or East Tennessee?

Elopements may take place at courthouses, local parks, cabins, private properties, small wedding venues, mountain overlooks, waterfalls, downtown locations, or places that have personal meaning to the couple. Some locations require permission, reservations, or permits, so couples should confirm current rules before making final plans.

Do you photograph elopements outside Johnson City?

Yes. Captures by Chloe photographs elopements and micro-weddings throughout the Tri-Cities and in surrounding areas of East Tennessee. Contact Chloe with your location so she can confirm availability and whether a travel fee applies.

Can family members and friends be included in our photographs?

Yes. Even intimate elopements can include portraits with witnesses, children, parents, relatives, and close friends. If you are planning group photographs, it helps to prepare a short list in advance so the most important combinations are not missed.

What is your elopement photography style?

My photography style is candid, authentic, and slightly vintage. Approximately 80 percent of my wedding photographs are candid and 20 percent are posed. I allow genuine emotions and interactions to unfold naturally while providing gentle direction for couple portraits, family photographs, and important group pictures.

Do you accept last-minute elopement bookings?

Last-minute bookings may be available depending on the date, location, and amount of coverage needed. Contact me as soon as you know your plans so I can check availability.

How long does it take to receive our edited photographs?

After you receive the initial gallery and select your favorite photographs, professionally edited images are typically completed and delivered within six weeks. Your final photographs will be provided through an online gallery that you can view, download, and share.
