Family Portraits in the Tri-Cities - Captures by Chloe

Family portraits preserve the people, personalities, and connections that make this season of your life special. As a Tri-Cities family photographer, I create relaxed, natural portraits for families throughout Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, and the surrounding areas.

My family photography sessions include a combination of gently posed portraits and candid moments. I provide direction when you need it, but I also leave room for your family to interact naturally. The laughter, hugs, playful moments, and little expressions are often the photographs that become the most meaningful.

Whether you are updating your annual family pictures, celebrating a milestone, or realizing it has simply been too long since everyone was in the same photograph, I would love to help you preserve this chapter of your family’s story.

A Relaxed and Candid Family Photography Experience

Family pictures should feel like your family, not like everyone is being forced into stiff poses and perfect smiles. I create a relaxed experience that allows personalities and relationships to come through naturally.

I will guide your family into flattering positions and help everyone feel comfortable in front of the camera. Once everyone is settled, I may use simple prompts that encourage movement, laughter, hugs, and genuine interaction. This creates a gallery that includes traditional portraits where everyone is looking at the camera as well as candid photographs filled with personality.

Children do not need to sit perfectly still or smile on command throughout the session. I am happy to follow their energy, give them time to warm up, and let them have fun. Some of the most meaningful family photographs happen in the unplanned moments between poses.

My goal is for your session to feel easy and enjoyable while creating photographs that honestly reflect your family and the connection you share.

Family Portraits for Every Season of Life

There does not have to be a major occasion to schedule family pictures. Children grow, families change, and the everyday moments that feel ordinary now often become the memories you value most later.

Family portrait sessions can celebrate a new baby, a milestone birthday, an adoption, an anniversary, or a child preparing to leave for college. They are also a wonderful way to update the photographs displayed in your home, create images for holiday cards, or make sure everyone in the family is finally included in the same picture.

I photograph immediate families, grandparents with grandchildren, siblings, adult children with their parents, and multiple generations together. Whether your family is entering an exciting new chapter or you simply want to preserve life as it is right now, I will create a collection of photographs that reflects the people and connections most important to you.

Where to Have Family Pictures in Johnson City and the Tri-Cities

The location you choose helps shape the overall look and feeling of your family portraits. Some families love open fields and mountain views, while others prefer trees, walking paths, water, or a more urban background. I can help you choose a setting that fits your family, the season, and the style you want for your photographs.

Willow Springs Park in Johnson City

Willow Springs Park is one of my favorite locations for family portraits in Johnson City. It has open grassy areas, trees, walking paths, and beautiful mountain views without making the background feel too busy. There is room for children to move around, which makes it easier to capture relaxed expressions and natural family interactions.

Founders Park in Downtown Johnson City

Founders Park is a great choice for families who want a combination of greenery and downtown character. The creek, landscaping, walking paths, and nearby buildings provide several different backgrounds within a relatively compact area. It works especially well for families who want portraits that feel polished, modern, and connected to Johnson City.

Winged Deer Park in Johnson City

Winged Deer Park offers trees, open spaces, walking areas, and views near Boone Lake. Depending on the season and the specific area we use, it can provide a peaceful natural setting with plenty of variety for both posed family portraits and candid photographs.

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park in Elizabethton

Sycamore Shoals State Historic Park offers wooded areas, open grass, walking paths, historic features, and views along the Watauga River. It can be a beautiful choice for families in Elizabethton or those who want a natural setting with more texture and visual variety.

Roan Mountain and Carver’s Gap

For families who want sweeping mountain scenery, Roan Mountain State Park and the areas surrounding Carver’s Gap offer some of the most dramatic views in the region. These locations can be especially beautiful during the summer and fall, but mountain weather and accessibility should be considered when planning the session.

Choosing the Right Location for Your Family

The best location is not always the most elaborate one. Your family should remain the focus of every photograph. I consider the ages of your children, the time of year, travel distance, accessibility, lighting, and the type of scenery you prefer before recommending a location.

Families with young children may be more comfortable in an open park where they can move and play. Older children and adults may enjoy a downtown setting or a mountain location that requires a little more walking. If you are unsure where to go, I can help you select a location in Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, Elizabethton, or the surrounding Tri-Cities area that complements your family without distracting from the people in the photographs.

Rules for professional photography can vary by location and may change, so any required permission, reservation, or fee should be confirmed before the session.

Family Photography FAQs

How much does a family photography session cost?

Family portrait sessions begin at $200. I offer several packages with different session lengths, numbers of edited photographs, and location options. Families with more than six people can contact me for a custom rate.

Where do family photography sessions take place?

I photograph families throughout Johnson City, Kingsport, Bristol, Elizabethton, and the surrounding Tri-Cities area. Premium sessions may also be held in locations such as Roan Mountain, Carver’s Gap, Watauga, and Greeneville. I can help you choose a location based on your family, the season, and the type of scenery you prefer.

How many people can be included in a family session?

My listed family portrait packages include up to six people. Larger and extended families are welcome, but additional time and planning may be needed. Contact me with the approximate number of participants, and I will provide the appropriate rate.

Do you photograph extended families?

Yes. Extended-family sessions can include grandparents, adult children, grandchildren, siblings, couples, and individual households. I can photograph the entire group together as well as smaller combinations within the family.

What happens if my child does not cooperate?

Children are not expected to sit perfectly still or smile on command throughout the session. I allow time for them to become comfortable and use simple prompts, movement, and play to encourage natural expressions. Parents do not need to worry about everything going perfectly.

What should we wear for family pictures?

Choose clothing that coordinates without making everyone look identical. Complementary colors, comfortable fabrics, and subtle textures usually photograph well. Try to avoid large logos, busy graphics, and patterns that may distract from your family. I am happy to offer guidance if you need help planning your outfits.

What happens if it rains on the day of our session?

East Tennessee weather can be unpredictable. If rain or unsafe weather is expected, I will communicate with you about the available options. Depending on the conditions and location, we may adjust the time or reschedule the session.

Can we bring our dog to our family photography session?

Dogs may be included when the selected location allows pets. Please let me know in advance so we can choose an appropriate setting and plan for photographs both with and without your dog. Pets should remain safely leashed when they are not being photographed.

How far in advance should we book family pictures?

Booking early gives you the best selection of dates, especially during the busy fall and holiday seasons. If you need photographs for holiday cards, gifts, or a particular milestone, allow enough time for the session, image selection, editing, and delivery.

Will you help us pose?

Yes. I will guide your family into flattering positions and make sure everyone knows what to do. I also use simple prompts that encourage natural interaction, so your gallery includes both traditional portraits and candid moments.

How many photographs will we receive?

The number of edited photographs depends on the package you select. Current packages include 12, 16, or 20 edited digital images chosen from your online gallery. You will also receive the unedited digital images included with your selected package.

How do we book a family portrait session?

Contact Captures by Chloe with your preferred date, location, package, and the number of people participating. I will help you plan the details and choose the right option for your family.
